Recognising facial redness
Facial redness-prone skin occurs mainly in fair-skinned individuals. The symptoms are bright red, sometimes purple, colour on the skin of the face to varying degrees. This unusual discolouration may be concentrated in a specific area of the face: redness around the nose, red cheeks, etc., or over the whole face.
Some redness-prone skin is temporary, known as flushes, while others can last for months, especially on hypersensitive skin. Several symptoms may accompany them, such as hot skin, itching, red spots on the face, etc.
Causes of facial redness-prone skin
Facial redness-prone skin is caused by dilation of the blood vessels in the dermis and under the epidermis.
This phenomenon can result from overheating of the skin on the face in response to strong emotions (anger, embarrassment, stress or shyness) or external or internal stimuli:
- Consumption of alcohol or spicy food.
- Physical activity.
- Insect bites.
- Exposure to very high temperatures.
- Some prescribed treatments.
- Menopausal hot flushes.
- Exposure to excessive UV radiation or without sun protection resulting in red patches, or sunburn.
